7 Wonders of Hawaii, The Big Island:

1) HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

In the domain of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, you will find Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. The current eruption, ongoing since January 1983, is the largest and longest volcanic flank eruption in history. Crater Rim Drive is a wonder of Sulphur banks, steam vents, lava tubes and landscapes of strange lava formations.

Not only is Kahalu’u Bay one of the best places on the Big Island for snorkeling, perhaps rivaling top statewide spots to see tropical fish and sea life, but the bay and its surrounding areas hold significant historical and cultural value to the coastline of Ali’i Drive.

While Kahalu’u Beach Park may not be your stereotypical Hawai’i long strand white beach, the salt and pepper sand throughout the park is plentiful, perfect for laying out a towel or beach chairs between snorkeling sessions.

Fish in the bay area of Kahalu’u are abundant and friendly as low water levels and an abundance of coral reef provide the most pristine conditions for snorkeling in the Kona waters.

Activity has been increasing at the Kilauea crater. Here you can see an evening picture of the the active lava rising up to the Halema'uma'u Crater.  If you haven't seen it yet, go now...its the best view in about 20 years!

There was slight inflation at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano over the past day. The summit lava lake remains close to the rim of the Overlook crater but did not spill onto the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater
